Xfce desktop environment

screenshot2.pngI started using the Xfce desktop environment under Ubuntu the other day and have loved it so far. GNOME is a bit too heavyweight for me, so I’ve been using Fluxbox for a few months. It’s lightning fast and really slick, but there’s no eye candy whatsoever.

So the other day I decided to download Xfce and try it out. It looks quite similar to GNOME but runs a lot faster. It’s much easier to customize than fluxbox and it supports my keyboard metakeys much better. Plus the eye candy is great without taking too much toll on the speed. I really like the themes, too. (There are even some windows-esque ones.) And everything runs just as well or better under Xfce as it did under fluxbox.

Another cool feature is the ability to create multiple “sessions” or startup profiles. You can set Xfce to prompt you for which session you want when you log in. So I can create one for play, one for work, and one with nothing special.

So there you have some ramblings about the wonders of Xfce.

I really like the look of XFCE, even though I haven’t really used it. Compared to Wiindows, how fast is it? Slower? Faster? I also like XFCE’s logo, a mouse, isn’t it? I don’t really know what else to say, but maybe you should update that screenshot to this WordPress Blog. ;)
    Bye.

I don’t really know how to compare Xfce to Windows, they’re different animals. Hehe. But yeah, the logo is a mouse.

  • smallgeek

Cool. Yeah, I guess they are different, though. This doesn’t have to do with anything but I just noticed there is a tiny smiley face at the very bottom of this page called g.gif, just so you know. :) Have fun, and thanks for replying!

I hadn’t noticed the smiley before. Looks like it is the hook that lets WordPress track the stats on the blog. The one on Scobleizer is a lot more obvious–right under the logo.

  • smallgeek

What do you mean by the hook that lets it track the stats? How could they have an image do that? I don’t really unserstand that kind of stuff. Just so you know, there must be an error in that link, unless the site’s hook is some banner with a for sale sign and some other stuff and FF has to block pop-up adds for it. We all make mistakes, though. ;)

Ah, I was spelling it wrong. Thanks for catching that.

They attach a bunch of query parameters to the filename, and it loads the “image” from the stats server. Basically, it’s just sending a request to the server with information about what page it’s on, etc. The stats server stores that information and returns the image.

  • smallgeek

Cool. That still doesn’t completely make sense, but it’s cool still the same. But, now there isn’t a little smiley face down at the bottom of the page, probably because this a different theme and different blog. I like this new theme, and, of course, the blog.
    Bye.

It’s over on the right sidebar on this template. ;)

  • smallgeek

Oh, I see. Tricky, tricky, hiding it in all these different places now, aren’t they :)
    Cool.
